Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) was a Post-Impressionist French painter who bridged the gap between the Impressionism movement of the 19th century and the Cubism style of 20th century. Although not famous in his lifetime, Cézanne is now considered one of the most important and influential painters in modern art history. Both Matisse and Picasso called him “the father of us all.”

As this Art Institute of Chicago biography reveals, Paul Cézanne “was a shy man who adopted a deliberately crude, rustic manner to keep people away.” As part of the museum’s Art Explorer website, you can create a free online account and create a scrapbook of artists and artworks that interest you. This resource includes a short biography, a gallery of nine paintings, and a dozen critical analyses of artworks including Madame Cézanne in a Yellow Armchair and Basket of Apples.

MoMA: Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne “epitomized the reaction against [Impressionism] when he declared: ‘I wanted to make of Impressionism something solid and enduring, like the art in museums.’” He accomplished this by creating the style that became known as Post-Impressionism. At this MoMA virtual exhibit, you can explore a gallery of his works, although “he rarely dated his works (and often did not sign them either).”

Paul Cézanne: The Complete Works

With hundreds of images of Cézanne’s paintings available, you can really get a feel for the artist’s style. There are many still lifes, landscapes, and a half dozen self-portraits. Many of the paintings are very dark, revealing how this shy and unhappy man felt about the world around him. The site also includes a biography and a selection of links to more Cézanne sites.

Your heart is located in the upper left-hand side of your chest and if you place your hand there, you can feel it beating. The heart continually pumps blood to all parts of the body, and never stops beating, even when you are asleep. Because of its importance, many complex surgeries (and even artificial hearts) have been developed to keep one’s heart going thump, thump, thump.

Wow! During your lifetime, your heart will beat two and a half billion times without stopping to rest. This site provides information about what the human heart is, and how it grows and develops. It also explains the structure of the heart, with images and diagrams. There are activities for the classroom, index cards, images, and links to additional reading about the heart. “Like a pumping machine, the heart provides the power needed for life. This life-sustaining power has, throughout time, caused an air of mystery to surround the heart.”

InnerBody: Human Heart Picture

Point and click your way around this interactive heart diagram from InnerBody that introduces the parts of the heart and their functions. “Internally, the heart is divided into four hollow chambers, two on the left and two on the right. The upper chambers, called ?atria,’ have relatively thin walls and receive blood returning through the veins.” Visit to learn more about chambers, ventricles, valves, veins and how they all connect.

KidsHealth: Your Heart & Circulatory System

“Did you give your friends valentines and little heart-shaped candies on Valentine’s Day? Do you ever cross your heart when making a promise that you really, really mean? Or turn on the radio to hear a guy singing about his broken heart?” KidsHealth explains that your heart isn’t your emotional center and doesn’t make you fall in love. The heart is a tireless muscle pumping blood to your organs. And without it, your other organs wouldn’t get the oxygen or energy they need to do their job.

#2. Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is actually not just one wall, but a series of walls built in Northern China to protect against intruders. The total length of the wall, including trenches and other natural barriers, is 5500 miles. Construction started in 5th century BC with stamped earth and wooden board frames. Although some parts of the wall have been renovated (including sections in Beijing that host many tourists) many other parts are disappearing due to erosion.

This Activity Village page starts with craft (Great Wall of Friendship) and then tells the story of the Wall with answers to frequently asked questions such as: “How tall is the Great Wall of China?”, “When was the Great Wall of China built?” and “Who built the Great Wall of China?” It concludes with links to a few external sites, and links to related Chinese craft activities.

EDSITEment: The Great Wall of China

“Test your knowledge of ancient Chinese dynastic periods that build the great wall. With each correct answer, you will have ?built’ a section of the wall.” This interactive, seven-question map game is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ EDSITEment site. If you answer any question incorrectly, it will point you to a Library of Congress resource for the answer. “Question 1: Who were the Chinese trying to keep out of China during the Ming Dynasty?”

Great Wall of China Facts

“Development of the Great Wall started before the birth of Christ and continued up to when Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sailed to America. Fear made the Chinese build the longest wall in the world, also known as the ‘longest cemetery ever built.’ This is because millions of poor Chinese peasants who worked to build the wall were buried in it when they died from exhaustion and pain.” Although the grammar isn’t perfect, there is a lot of detail here about the history of the Wall, and the many battles it survived.

#2. Prohibition

Prohibition (1920 – 1933) was a period of American history in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol was illegal. The 18th Amendment (which created Prohibition) was ratified on January 16, 1919 and was the first amendment to address a social issue. It later became the first and only amendment to be repealed, when the 21st Amendment ended “The Noble Experiment” on December 6, 1933.

Library Company: Ardent Spirits

The Library Company of Philadelphia is an independent research library specializing in early American history and founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin. Ardent Spirits is an online exhibit about the origins of the American temperance movement. “When Philadelphian Dr. Benjamin Rush published his ‘moral thermometer’ in the late 18th century, he set the American temperance movement into motion. The thermometer was a visual depiction of the horrors that awaited drunkards, and it placed both moderate drinkers and abstainers on the moral high ground.”

Library of Congress: Prohibition: A Case Study of Progressive Reform

This Library of Congress mini-site includes links to seven primary source documents, and an overview of the temperance movement. The source documents include a WPA interview with Samuel D. Mobley, a retired cotton broker. About prohibition, he responded, “I have noticed that every attempt to legislate morals into the people has resulted in disaster. I will call your attention to the fact that you and I remember when we had the old barroom system, the State dispensary system prohibition, and the present retail liquor shops. No system is perfect, but the worst of all was the prohibition law.”

National Archives: The Volstead Act

The Volstead Act was federal legislation that became law on October 28, 1919, specifying how the 18th Amendment would be enforced. This archive includes links to both the Volstead Act and the text of the 18th and 21st Amendments. Using these original sources, students can answer questions posed in the last paragraph. Why did this social experiment not work? What can we learn from Prohibition? How can we compare it to the modern war on drugs?

#2. The Euro

The euro (or EUR) entered circulation on January 1, 2002 and is the official currency of some, but not all European Union countries. The seventeen countries that use the euro are known as the eurozone: Austria, Belgium, Cypress, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain. Since 2009, the euro has been making headlines because of the European debt crisis.

CNN: Europe’s Debt Crisis

For high school students and grownups, CNN presents a roundup of news articles about the euro’s current crisis. Some pundits are forecasting the breakup of the European currency union, meaning that eurozone countries will once again begin printing and circulating their own national currency. Others say that the euro is here to stay, and that the crisis will pass with the euro in tact.

Euro Kids’ Corner

For elementary and middle-school, Euro Kids’ Corner is chock full of euro-themed games, a leaderboard listing the top ten players, and a lesson covering the history of European money and the euro. “In the past, the countries in the European Union made several attempts to move towards economic union and a single currency. However, it was not until 1991, in the city of Maastricht in the Netherlands, that European leaders decided upon a firm timetable to adopt a single currency.”

Audible Gift Cards, Memberships or Audiobooks: Audiobooks are another one of my favorite indulgences. I love listening to books on my Android phone while I drive, walk or exercise. Unfortunately I drive more often that I walk or exercise, but that’s another story!

Amazon Gift Cards: What can I possibly say about Amazon? Is there anyone on the planet (that has Internet access) that couldn’t find themselves a great gift at Amazon? For me, I love Kindle books, kitchen gadgets, and tech, so any Amazon gift cards coming my way will probably be spent on on a book, a whisk or the latest tech thingy I’ve decided I can’t live without.

While we are on the subject of gift giving, thank you for the encouraging words about my Holiday Gift Guide. I definately will do it again next year, I will just start it a little earlier. And, according to my web stats, the most popular gifts on the list were the packing cubes, followed by the Dearfoam slippers.

During the American Revolutionary War, on the evening of December 25, 1776, General George Washington led 2,400 Continental Army soldiers across the very icy Delaware River to attack the pro-British Hessian troops camped in Trenton, New Jersey. Our collective memory of this attack is strengthened by the famous oil painting by Emanuel Leutze, painted fifty years after the event. This painting (or the engraving of it that was published a few years later by M. Knoedler) is reproduced in nearly, every American history textbook.

Awesome Stories: Washington Crosses the Delaware

Why did Washington choose Christmas night to cross the Delaware River? He knew the Hessian troops liked to celebrate holidays, and would not be expecting them. From their Highlights of the American Revolution series, Awesome Stories tells the story of both the historical event and the famous oil painting by Leutze. In addition to the Leutze painting, there is a link to an 1876 Currier & Ives hand-colored lithograph with the same title. To see it, look for the linked phrase “cold and icy.”

Eyewitness to History: Washington Crosses the Delaware

“During the night of December 25, Washington led his troops across the ice-swollen Delaware about 9 miles north of Trenton. The weather was horrendous and the river treacherous. Raging winds combined with snow, sleet and rain to produce almost impossible conditions.” This article includes a small map, showing Washington’s approach on Trenton, and a first person report writtten by Elisha Bostwick, a soldier in the Continental Army. You’ll find Bostwick’s tale about half-way down the page. Note that he calls Washington “his Excellency.”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Washington Crossing the Delaware

The huge (12 ft by 21 ft) oil painting that is on display in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was not Leutze’s first painting of Washington crossing the Delaware. “Leutze began his first version of this subject in 1849. It was damaged in his studio by fire in 1850 and, although restored and acquired by the Bremen Kunsthalle, was again destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942.” The painting owned by the Met, was started in 1850. Biomimicry is the examination and mimicry of natural systems by engineers, scientists and inventors. Although the term “biomimicry” was first used in 1982, man has looked at nature to find inspiration for problem-solving technology since the beginning of time. For example, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) studied bird flight when designing his “flying machine,” as did the Wright brothers when creating the first successful airplane in 1903.

Ask Nature: What is Biomimicry?

Ask Nature (a project of the Biomimicry Institute) is a collaborative site where biologists, designers and engineers can share information on how nature solves problems, with the goal of helping engineers to mimic biological adaptions to solve human problems. The rest of us should visit the site to read “What is Biomimicry?” and watch founder Janine Benyus describe twelve design ideas inspired by nature.

Biomimicy Guild: A Conversation with Janine Benyus

In this interview, Benyus explains how and why engineers can learn from nature. Be sure to download the first chapter of her book “Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature.” You’ll find the link at the top of the left-hand column. “The core idea is that nature, imaginative by necessity, has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. They have found what works, what is appropriate, and most important, what lasts here on Earth.”

Biomimicry Institute: What is Biomimicry?

“Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example. I think of it as ‘innovation inspired by nature.’” Although there is some overlap in content at Biomimicry Guild and the Biomimicry Institute (they are sister organizations), this site includes K12 curriculum ideas (look for the Youth Ed link under Education and Training), and a reading list that includes recommendations for both adults and children (filed under Resources.)

She is known in pop culture as simply Cleopatra, although there were six Egyptian queens before her with the same name. Cleopatra VII (69 – 30 BCE) was the last pharaoh in the Ptolemy dynasty, and although ruthless at times, her intelligence and charm captured history’s imagination.

“The stories and myths surrounding Cleopatra’s tragic life inspired a number of books, movies, and plays, including Antony and Cleopatra by Shakespeare. Cleopatra has become one of the most well-known ancient Egyptians.” This three-page biography includes links to related bios, such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. British Museum: Cleopatra of Egypt

Take a virtual tour of highlights from the 2001 British Museum’s Cleopatra of Egypt exhibit. Each of the fourteen objects is annotated, and a click on the thumbnail (or the magnifying glass) brings up a beautiful, enlarged view of the art piece. “The exhibition traced Cleopatra’s life as queen of Egypt and her liaisons with the two great Roman leaders of the day, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.”

“Cleopatra was descended from a line of rulers that began with Ptolemy I, a general who served under Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE.” Although the Cleopatra of Egypt exhibit has long left Chicago, you can still explore parts of it online. In the game, you will help archaeologists search Alexandria for shards from an early portrait of Cleopatra, then reassemble the pieces.

The South Pole is the southernmost point of the Earth’s surface. It is in Antarctica, at an elevation of 9300 feet, surrounded by miles and miles of icy terrain. It was discovered on December 14, 1911 by Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), who led an expedition of four men, four sleds and fifty-two sled dogs, who all returned safely from their explorations. The second expedition, led by Captain Robert F. Scott (1868-1912) was not as fortunate. After successfully reaching the South Pole, all five men died trying to return to base camp.

American Museum of Natural History: Antarctica

Although this AMNH site is written for teachers, students will find much here to help with homework and research reports. The bulk of the educational content is contained in PDFs that open in small (annoying) pop-up windows, but can be easily printed. In addition to this page about the exploration of Antarctica, there are also sections on Extreme Temperatures, Hazards to Humans and Organisms of Antarctica. “The first man to reach the South Pole, Norwegian Roald Amundsen , explored both the Arctic and the Antarctic.”

Cool Antarctica: Roald Amundsen

“Before the [Roald Amundsen] expedition set off to drift over the North Pole, news reached Amundsen of Peary’s attainment of the their goal. Plans were hastily changed and Amundsen set out to lead the party that would the first to reach the South Pole instead.” Paul Ward, a British teacher, worked for two years as a zoologist in Antarctica, fulfilling a dream that started when he was a teenager. Other valuable clicks include a photo gallery, and an Antarctica fact file.

PBS: Alone on the Ice: Roald Amundsen

“A powerfully built man of over six feet in height, Amundsen was born into a family of merchant sea captains and prosperous ship owners in 1872.” This PBS bio of Roald Amundsen is part of their Alone on the Ice website. Alone on the Ice is a television movie about Commander Richard E. Byrd’s exploration of the Antarctica, but also includes coverage of other famous Arctic and Antarctic explorers, such as Amundsen, Bernt Balchen and Floyd Bennett.
