<img src="http://www.surfnetkids.com/cgi-local/pl/pl.cgi?rss" border="0" alt="Barbara J. Feldman" align="bottom" width="58" height="58"> Dear Reader,<br><br>
<p>Okay, I got the message. Thanks for letting me know I stepped out of line when I <a target="_blank" href="http://www.surfnetkids.com/newsletters/2009-11-03.htm?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=free&utm_campaign=20091118">quoted Mao Tse Tung</a> in a recent Surfnetkids newsletter. He was a mass murderer, and therefore doesn't deserve the privilege of being quoted. </p>

<p>His quote "<a target="_blank" href="http://www.lightafire.net/quotations/authors/mao-tse-tung/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=free&utm_campaign=20091118">Women hold up half the sky</a>" has lead to some good, however, as it has been usurped by at least two movements that I know of. First is the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.halfthesky.org/">Half the Sky Foundation</a> that supports Chinese orphans. And second is the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.halftheskymovement.org/">Half the Sky Movement</a> based on the book of the same name by Dr. Tererai Trent and Sheryl WuDunn. This organization supports and advocates for women in developing countries.</p>

<p>Although I haven't read their book, I have been on a "women in developing countries" binge in my reading habits lately, having really loved both "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143038257?ie=UTF8&tag=surfinthenetwith&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0143038257" target="_blank">Three Cups of Tea</a>" by Greg Mortenson and "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159448385X?ie=UTF8&tag=surfinthenetwith&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=159448385X" target="_blank">A Thousand Splendid Suns</a>" by Khaled Hosseini. If you have a book club, or simply enjoy tackling somewhat difficult subjects in your reading, I wholeheartedly recommend "A Thousand Splendid Suns." It weaves the story of two women in Afghan over thirty years of turmoil, and the incredible way their lives intertwine. I loved it, it was very moving. </p>

<p>Getting back to my original topic of quoting evil men, please <a target="_blank" href="http://www.barbarafeldman.com/women_hold_up_half_the_sky.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=free&utm_campaign=20091118"> add your thoughts here</a>. I'd love to hear more on the pros and cons of whether or not Mao Tse Tung quotes should be used in an educational setting. </p>

See ya on the Net,<br>

Whether choosing books for avid readers or finding titles for reluctant readers, these websites are sure to help. In addition to book reviews, they offer games, printable worksheets, author bios and an opportunity for kids to interact with others who love the same books they do.

Alan Brown: Just for Kids Who Love Books<br>
<img src="http://www.surfnetkids.com/images/kid-sml-star4.gif" border="0" alt="****"> <br>
Alan Brown, a retired Canadian school librarian, updates this site every day with posts from kids about their favorite books. In addition to the book reviews, kids between eight and fourteen can submit short stories, favorite quotes, and comments about their favorite books. Although many of the kids respond to posts written by others, the messages are not threaded (forum-style) so it can be a bit hard to follow conversations. Brown also lists resources for finding author sites and lists of book awards.

HarperCollins: Children's Books<br>
<img src="http://www.surfnetkids.com/images/kid-sml-star5.gif" border="0" alt="*****"> <br>
Discover books, authors, and illustrators through games, videos and contests at the kids portal of publisher HarperCollins Children's. My favorite click is Browse Inside, where you can preview over 10,500 books such as "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman or "The Composer is Dead" by Lemony Snicket. Browse Inside also allows you to embed these previews on your MySpace profile or website. Very cool! The browseable books are organized into lists of Bestsellers, Most Emailed and Most Viewed, or you can search them by keyword.

Kids@Random<br>
<img src="http://www.surfnetkids.com/images/kid-sml-star5.gif" border="0" alt="*****"> <br>
The official site for kids books at Random House is a collection of mini-sites for treasured book characters such as Thomas & Friends, Junie B, Berenstain Bears and hundreds of others from the likes of Disney, Dr. Seuss and Sesame Street. Visit to keep up with your favorite book series, and to interact with your favorite characters at their websites. The Magic Tree House site, for example, has printable activities, online games, and a Readers & Writers Club with tips for budding writers.
