Dear Reader,

Today’s topic, Quotations, grew out of my recent expansion into educational inspiration. As with any idea, one thing just lead to another, and Surfnetkids now has quite a few free resources based on motivational education quotes. Today seemed like the perfect time to list them all.

  1. The grandmother of them all is the Surfnetkids “Light an Educational Fire” movie. Please watch it, and pass it on.
  2. Next came the daily quote applet for webmasters.
  3. Then, based on a reader’s suggestion, came the daily educational quote via email.

Enjoy!

Why do we love quotations? Marlene Dietrich, the German-born American actress and singer, summed it up nicely when she said “I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.” Whether you are looking for daily inspiration, the author of a quote that you can’t quite remember, or just the right opener for your school report, these five sites make it easy.

Annabelle’s Quotation Guide

http://www.annabelle.net/

****

From “Adventure” to “Writing,” Annabelle’s quotes are arranged into 120 topics, including some unique ones such as “September 2001 Attacks” and “Censorship & Free Speech.” Click on any quote’s author to see more, or visit “Topics” to browse authors alphabetically. There is also a search function, making it easy to find exactly what you are looking for. Annabelle’s best clicks, however, are her Quote Grams. Pair a quote with a photo, and send them to friends and family.

Bartleby.com: Familiar Quotations

http://www.bartleby.com/100/

****

John Bartlett, an American publisher born in 1820, published nine editions of “Familiar Quotations” in his lifetime. This is the 1919 tenth edition, the first to be produced after his death. Traverse it with the search function, or the chronological and alphabetic author indexes. There is also an alphabetic concordance of keywords, which is interesting to peruse, but not as useful as a topic index would be.

Brainy Quote

http://www.brainyquote.com/

*****

Brainy Quote hosts “over 38,000 famous quotes by 10,000 authors from Aristotle to Zappa.” But it’s the author bios and fun extras that make Brainy Quote my pick of the day. Many quote collections simply list the author’s name, but at Brainy Quote each author’s page includes some biographical facts and a link to their books at Amazon.com. Want to add a daily quote to your own site? No problem. In fact, Brainy Quote offers six topics for you to choose from. And just for the fun of it, try your hand at Quote Trivia.
