#1. May 12,

Barbara J. Feldman
Dear Reader,

When I was in my early twenties, fresh out of college, my company (Varian Data Machines)
transferred me to Zurich for a few years where I worked as a computer analyst, installing a home
banking system for Swiss Credit Bank. The years were 1976, 1977, and 1978. During those years
I traveled (and worked) on both continents, traveling back and forth eight times. The more you
travel, the smaller the world becomes. And after returning home permanently, I still traveled to
Europe to vacation and ski. At that time I had every right to imagine that my life would always be
like that — traveling wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted.

When Howard and I married, I even drug him on one of those whirlwind “if it’s Tuesday it must
be Belgium” tours of western Europe. Two years later Matthew was born, and then four years
later came Erica. And my world become smaller. Much smaller. And even the thought of
European travel got harder and harder.

Now Matthew is sixteen and Erica twelve. If I want to take my kids to Europe, I better do it

Learning to Count Printable (** for premium members only)

Preschoolers love computers. And what better way to satisfy their curiosity than by enticing
them with something that’s both fun and educational. Today’s crop of website games are for those
just learning to count. Before you start, make sure your browser is equipped with Flash (
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash ), Shockwave ( http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi? ) and Java
( http://java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.jsp ).

Count Us In
This collection of fifteen number games from the Australian Broadcasting Company is terrific; I
only wish they had more descriptive titles, and some sound or music. For counting beginners,
games one, five and eight are my favorites. All the games are available for free download, so they
can be played offline on either a Mac or Windows computer. For a description of each game,
click on the yellow “games” menu item.

Learning Planet: Count your Chickens
Click on by to count chickens, cats, fish, cows and ducks from one to nine. When you’re finished,
try your hand at 123 Order ( http://www.learningplanet.com/act/123order.asp ) to figure out “1, 2. What comes next?” For more preschool games, visit Activities from the horizontal menu. Some of the games are for paying subscribers only, but there are ten free ones, including Number
Train and Rusty Rat’s Falling Numbers.

A Kids Heart: Number Worksheets
Some skills, such as learning to write cardinal numbers, can not be practiced online. That’s why I
love these ten printable worksheets. Each one features a large color-it-in number along with space
to practice manuscript writing. With the help of some computer magic (for which you’ll need the
free Flash player), these black and white worksheets print beautifully, without any annoying
headers or footers.
