Barbara J. Feldman
Dear Barbara,

We did it! On Sunday, the first day of spring, the kids and I planted our vegetable garden. Last year we did the weeding, but never put any plants in the ground, so we are very proud of this year’s accomplishment. We planted tomatoes, jalepenos, sweet peppers, zucchini, cilantro, parsley, and pole beans.

We’re not the sort of gardeners that you’ll see on TV or in a magazine. Our rows are crooked, and I’m not sure that all our plants have enough space around them. But here’s a snapshot.

Oh… and that’s not our puppy. That’s Shana. She digs underneath the fence of our backyard neighbor to visit our dogs (Felix and Latke) nearly every day. And I just learned that she can easily jump over the little chicken-wire fence we built to keep the bunnies out. Uh oh! I hope she doesn’t like tomatoes.

See ya on the Net,
Barbara J. Feldman

Pre-Algebra Printable (** for premium members only)

My seventh-grade daughter has a tee shirt that says “Pre-Algebra: the beginning of the end!” And if high-school math is the end objective, then pre-algebra certainly is the beginning. Here are my picks for sites that both explain pre-algebra, and provide an opportunity for practice.

Absurd Math
http://www.learningwave.com/abmath/
*****
Taking word problems to a new level, Absurb Math is an episodic story game that integrates pre-algebra level math into the game play. To start a new game, choose an episode and a username. To continue a game previously started, enter a page code, along with your username. Each game page has a page code, a calculator, and a hint (if you need it.) These four episodes are free, but Learning Wave also sells a subscription service that includes over fifty interactive math stories. “The Airtight College is shipping some of its Dissolvent Solvent to the cult members of the Toxic Templex. Your quest to save the alien creature continues, as you search the offices of the Department of Diabolics.”

Glencoe: WebQuest Projects Pre-Algebra
http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/prealg/prealg03/webquest/index.php4/na
*****
Textbook publisher Glencoe has created five WebQuests that can be enjoyed by all pre-algebra students, even those using a different pre-algebra text. Each Internet project includes a task that requires online research, and suggested websites are included. For example, Unit 1 involves creating a website or a brochure promoting three seven-day vacation packages for a family of four. Each package must include transportation, lodging and entertainment, and cost between $2500 to $5500.

GoMath: Algebra Solutions
http://www.gomath.com/algebra.html
*****
GoMath Pre-Algebra includes twelve common topics, such as negative numbers and square roots. Each topic page includes examples, rules, a link to a complete lesson, and a link to a printable worksheet. But the heart of each topic page is the calculator which not only provides answers, but shows you step-by-step how the answer is computed. In other words, this calculator shows its work! You can input your own values, or click Practice to have the calculator generate problems for you.
