Surfing the Net with Kids FREE Newsletter
#1. October 17, 2012
Dear Reader,
Got your mouse ready? Here’s what’s new in my world. In addition to this weekly newsletter, I also publish a weekly newsletter of Tech Tips. The Tech Tips blog used to be a separate site called Internet Tip of the Week. You can sign up for the Tech Tips newsletter (which is sent on Thursdays) by visiting the blog and looking in the right-hand column for the sign-up box.
But wait, there’s more! I also now have a newsletter that announces new games posted at Surfnetkids Games. To sign up for that one, look for the pink Games Newsletter box in the upper right-hand corner.
Next up, hubby and I are taking our first trip to Asia to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. WHEE!!! If you’d like to follow along, you can follow me on Twitter @barbarafeldman or Instagram (barbarafeldman) or on Facebook by subscribing to my public Facebook feed. Look for the “SUBSCRIBE” button because I limit my Facebook friends to people that I know personally. Another option is to LIKE the Surfnetkids Facebook page.
Still reading? Thanks for hanging in there!
See ya on the Net,
Barbara J. Feldman

With the presidential election just weeks away, the campaigns are heating up. In addition to the official sites for candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, here are some online resources for students to learn about the election process and keep up with the candidates.
270 to Win: 2012 Presidential Election Interactive Map
“It takes 270 electoral votes to win the Presidential election.” This interactive map shows each state and the number of electoral votes they control. As you click on each state, you can change it from red (Republican), to blue (Democrat), and then to tan (undecided.) As you modify each state, the total counter will also update. To begin, you can choose from a number of starting views, such as, for example, the actual results from the 2008 election, when the Democrats won with 365 electoral votes. If you have cookies enabled, your custom map will be saved for your return visits.
I Side With
Take a short quiz to find out which presidential candidate you agree with most. “3,847,241 voters have used iSideWith to find their candidate.” Questions are organized into issues such as the economy, foreign policy, the environment, science, immigration, healthcare and social issues. You might be surprised by your results!
My Voice National Student Mock Election
“The National Student/Parent Mock Election seeks to turn the sense of powerlessness that keeps young Americans and their parents, too, from going to the polls into a sense of the power of participation in our democracy.” Run by the non-profit Pearson Foundation and dozens of corporate sponsors, the nonprofit, nonpartisan program provides educational materials to anyone who wants to participate. In 2008, over 5 million students, parents and teachers participated. Since the project began, it has touched over 45 million participants. This year, the Mock Election will be held November 1, 2012.
