The Duties in American Colonies Act 1765; 5 George III, c. 12, is more commonly known as The Stamp Act of 1765. It imposed British taxes on the American colonies by requiring a stamp on every piece of printed paper. This included legal documents, newspapers, and licenses; nearly everything printed on paper except books. It is considered to be one of the first irritants that led to increasing unrest in the colonies, and a wish to be independent from British rule. “No taxation without representation” became a rallying cry of the upcoming Revolution.
History: Stamp Act
“The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first internal tax levied directly on American colonists by the British government. The act, which imposed a tax on all paper documents in the colonies, came at a time when the British Empire was deep in debt from the Seven Years’ War (1756-63) and looking to its North American colonies as a revenue source.” At the top of this section is a three-minute video about the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Townshend Act, and Tea Act (“…and we all know how that ended!”) It also introduces The Intolerable Acts which started in 1767 after the earlier tax acts were repealed.
John Adams History Society: Stamp Act and the Beginning of Political Activism
This section of the John Adams History Society has three articles about the Stamp Act: what it was, how it “marks the beginning of the struggle for freedom and American independence,” and what happened next. The Stamp Act was also a crucial turning point in John Adams’ career. A paper he wrote was presented to the General Court of Massachusetts, and became the basis for the slogan “no taxation without representation.”
Land of the Brave: Stamp Act of 1765
“The Stamp Act stamps were not like the stamps that we put on envelopes. Some documents were printed on stamped or embossed paper. The stamped or embossed papers had a tax on them and had to be bought from a government stamped paper office. Other documents were indented with a hand pressed stamp or had a foil seal.” Land of the Brave is a history of colonial America written specifically for kids. It has a bold, clean style, but lacks basic navigation.
