Dear Reader,

Psst… can I tell you a secret? I’m turning 60 in 3 weeks. Okay, so maybe it’s not such a secret, but it’s a big milestone, and one that’s been on my mind for about a year.

60? Wow. But as many have said before me, it’s just a number. But I believe it’s a number that deserves some recognition.

So I’ve decided to do something amazing for a child that needs heart surgery, but can’t afford it. I am raising money for a group of cardiac surgeons that donate their time and their expertise to help kids (and doctors) in disadvantaged communities all over the world. So far they have saved over 6000 children in places such as Iraq, Angola, Romania, Palestinian Authority, Haiti and more. The organization is called Save a Child’s Heart, and it is based in Israel.

It takes $10,000 to cover all the non-donated expenses, such as travel, medicine, equipment, and so on. I wish I could raise $10,000, but that number terrifies me. So I picked a much smaller goal of $3,000.

Can you find it in your heart to help me? Together we can save a life. http://www.crowdrise.com/barbaras60th/

*Save a Child’s Heart is a registered 501(c) (3) organization, and all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. SACH is certified by Independent Charities of America as one of the Best Charities in America, a designation awarded to charities that demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost effectiveness.

Amelia Mary Earhart, the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic, was born July 24, 1897 at her grandparents’ home in Atchison, Kansas. Despite her many pioneering achievements, she is best known for her tragic disappearance over the Pacific on July 2, 1937, halfway to her goal of circling the globe. Like many today, Earhart believed that technology would open new worlds for women.

Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum

Thousands of visitors a year tour the museum at Earhart’s birthplace in Atchison, KS. Best clicks for virtual visitors can be found under the Amelia Earhart subhead (in the left-hand menu) where you’ll find a biography, fun facts, and news clips. “During her childhood, Amelia invented a tribe of imaginary small black creatures she called Dee-Jays. Described as a cross between a Krazy Kat cartoon and a jabberwocky, the creatures were often blamed for Amelia’s own irresponsible behavior, such as: talking out of turn, eating the last piece of candy, or when something turned up lost.”

Amelia Earhart Biography

In 1920, Earhart flew in an open cockpit biplane at an aerial meet in Long Beach, California. “As soon as we had left the ground I knew I myself had to fly.” She soon began lessons with another women pilot, Anita “Neta” Snook, in a restored Canadian training plane. “On April 27, 1926, her life was to change forever . . . a phone call from Captain H.H. Railey asked, ‘How would you like to be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic?’” This detailed biography, neatly organized into Early Years, Celebrity and Last Flight, is a terrific resource for school reports.

Official Amelia Earhart Site

Created on behalf of Earhart’s family, this official site is excellent in content, design, and navigation, earning my pick of the day accolade. Of course there is an Earhart biography, but don’t stop there. Other highlights include a nice collection of quotes (“Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.” ), a photo gallery, and screensavers and wallpaper (listed under Downloads).

In 1607, thirteen years before the Pilgrims created Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, the first permanent English colony was founded at Jamestown Settlement in Virginia. The original colonists suffered a very rocky start, however, as just three later in 1610, only 60 colonists of the original 500 survived. With additional colonists arriving from the Old World, the settlement endured, and served as the capital of Virginia Colony for 83 years, from 1616 until 1699.

Earlier this month, archeologists confirmed “the first scientifically-proven occurrence of survival cannibalism in Colonial America. The collaboration was driven by the archaeological discovery of a partial human skull and tibia during excavation of an early 17th-century trash deposit in Jamestown.” Read Jane’s Story to learn more about the settler’s fight for survival during the era known as “the starving time.”

History is Fun: Jamestown Settlement

This official Jamestown Settlement website is managed by an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia, but in addition to the events calendar and other touristy details, there is also this one-page history brief, a video about the economy of 17th century Jamestown, and a chronology of important Jamestown events. “The first two English women arrived at Jamestown in 1608, and more came in subsequent years. Men outnumbered women, however, for most of the 17th century.”

Jamestown Rediscovery

“Excavations began in 1994 with the hopes of finding some evidence of the original 1607 James Fort, for over two centuries thought lost to river shoreline erosion. Today, archaeologists have rediscovered much of the fortification and have recovered over a million artifacts that tell the true story of Jamestown.” Site highlights include the interactive map of found artifacts, and the hyperlinked History of Jamestown article.

Dear Reader,

Did you read the news on Tuesday about the tweet that sent the stock market crashing? The market did quickly recover when it was discovered that the tweet was the result of a hacked account, and not accurate. If you’ve been sitting on the social media sidelines, this is one stunning incident that shows the power of social media.

What exactly were the 140 characters that sent the US stock market into a (brief) tailspin?

From @AP:
Breaking. Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.

Read more at CNN.

In related news, many are now beating the drum that it is time for Twitter to implement two-factor authentication.

“Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s first female prime minister and served three consecutive terms in office. She was one of the dominant political figures of 20th century Britain, and Thatcherism continues to have a huge influence.” This BBC mini site includes video highlights from their broadcast TV shows, and a short Thatcher biography. Afterwards the interviewer said she was ‘headstrong, obstinate and dangerously opinionated’. Dear Reader,

Last week I packed up three boxes of my newest CD-ROM product, and shipped it to Amazon. It is a collection of alphabet coloring sheets, featuring 37 different alphabets and more than 961 printable pages of coloring fun. It is an easy way to get ALL the alphabets over at AlphabetFun.net.

As soon as Amazon receives the boxes of CD-ROMs, they will be available for sale. Yay!

To kick start sales (and to rack up a few reviews!) it will be on sale for $14.95 until April 25th or until their inventory runs out.

Here’s the link (don’t know exactly when this will work, but here goes): Alphabet Coloring CD-ROM from Feldman Publishing.

Thanks for checking it out!

See ya on the Net,

Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated annually on April 22. Although ideally everyday should be Earth Day, the annual holiday presents the perfect opportunity to learn more about ecology and the environment.

DLTK: Earth Day Crafts

DLTK has a nice collection of Earth Day crafts and activities, starting with an article that explains the origins of Earth Day. “Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 and has been an important day ever since. It’s a day to reflect on our planet, our environment and what we can do to help keep them healthy.” It includes coloring pages, puzzles, poems, songs, printables, worksheets and (of course) crafts.

EcoKids

EcoKids is Canada’s environmental youth education program, and even though site membership is restricted to Canadian youth groups, there’s oodles of material for non-members. My favorite section is Play and Learn, with activities, slide shows, quizzes, games and PDF printables in topics such as the environment, science, nature, wildlife and energy. For example, did you know that every year thousands of frogs get squashed crossing roads to reach seasonal habitats? You can help by finding frog habitats that span busy roads and educating local drivers about the issue.

Kids for Saving the Earth

Clinton Hill succumbed to cancer at age eleven, but before he died he channeled his passion for the environment into a kids’ club dedicated to saving planet Earth. Now, his mother runs the organization, which provides free online information and low-cost classroom materials through the mail. Best clicks are the activities found in the Action Programs, such as creating an event for International Migratory Bird Day on May 2 or having a used book sale to support Reading for the Earth month. When is Reading for the Earth month? Any month you choose!

Have you seen my Alphabet Coloring site? Over the last several years, since first releasing the Plants and Animals Uppercase printable coloring pages, I have been asked many, many times for the names of all the plants and animals in each letter. I am thrilled to finally have a definitive answer key for these! Yay! Just go to the alphabet page itself, and you’ll see a link to the answer key.

This week’s topic is one usually studied in first year algebra: sequences and series. Let’s start with some definitions. A sequence is an ordered list of numbers, and a series is the sum of the terms (the individual numbers) of a sequence. For more lessons, here are my weekly website picks.

Cool Math Algebra: Sequences & Series Lessons

“A sequence is a list of numbers (or other things) that changes according to some sort of pattern.” This ten lesson section introduces arithmetic sequences, series, sigma notation, geometric sequences, mathematical induction and the binomial theorem. To move from one lesson to the next (each lesson is multiple pages), you need to return to this menu, which is linked at the bottom of each page.

Math is Fun: Arithmetic Sequences – Finding a Rule

“To find a missing number, first find a Rule behind the Sequence. Sometimes you can just look at the numbers and see a pattern.” After a few examples of how trial and error can help you discover a rule, at the bottom of the page you’ll find links to related topics, including Arithmetic Sequences, Geometric Sequences, Fibonacci Sequence and Triangular Sequence. Each of these topics also include related links at the bottom of the page, so be sure to look for them.

Math Guide: Arithmetic Sequences

After defining arithmetic sequences, this Math Guide lesson explains how to calculate the nth term. “In order for us to know how to obtain terms that are far down these lists of numbers, we need to develop a formula that can be used to calculate these terms. If we were to try and find the 20th term, or worse to 2000th term, it would take a long time if we were to simply add a number — one at a time — to find our terms.” At the bottom of the page, you’ll find four interactive quizzes on sequences and series.

There are nine parts of speech that classify how words are used in particular sentences. They are verbs, nouns, pronouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. In English, there are many words that can be more than one part of speech, so context is always important.
Constructed entirely of white marble in less than nine years, the Parthenon is widely regarded as the epitome of ancient Greek architecture. Built on a hill in the middle of Athens, known as the Acropolis, the Parthenon was dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. Travel there with me, on a virtual field trip.

Athens Guide: The Parthenon

“The debate over the Parthenon Marbles has been going on for two centuries and seems to be coming to a head. The statues and reliefs that Lord Elgin had come to draw and make molds from and ended up taking back to England have been in the British Museum almost that long.” Lord Elgin, a British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in the early nineteenth century, was given permission by the Turks to mold and sketch the sculpture in the Parthenon. With a few bribes, however, his workers found it more convenient to simply take the treasures back to Britain. Learn more about the Elgin Marbles at this site from travel writer Matt Barrett.

“The Athenian Acropolis is home to one of the most famous buildings in the world: the Parthenon. This temple was built for the goddess Athena. It was decorated with beautiful sculptures which represent the greatest achievement of Greek artists.” For middle and high-school students, this interactive exhibit from the British Museum is part of their larger Ancient Greece site. It has lots to explore and concludes with a challenge to build your own Greek temple honoring Athena.

“Considering all the abuse it has taken over the two and a half millennia since it was built, it is remarkable that the Parthenon is still standing. Now a Greek-led team is working hard to ensure it does for centuries to come.” Visit this PBS site to view the one-hour TV special (divided into five chapters) and to explore the three online interactives titled Restoring the Ruin, Scenes from a Quarry and The Parthenon’s Many Lives (trace its life as a temple, church, mosque, ammunition store, and army barracks).

Angie Dudley (aka Bakerella) invented the cupcake pop on February 1, 2008, and shortly there after was invited to the Martha Stewart television show to demonstrate making them. She’s since written the definite cake pop book (which you can find at her site) and has continued to blog about cake pops and baking on her blog. Because she has so many of them, the recipes here are divided into categories such as Cake Balls, Cake Pops, Cupcake Bites, Cupcake Pops, and more.
