In December of 2001, Congress passed a joint resolution permitting the President to declare September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, in commemoration of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. It is customary to fly the flag at half mast, and to observe a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their lives.

Created in 2002, Families and Work features four 9/11 lesson plans for K-12 students. Each of the age-appropriate lesson plans is available in both Word and PDF. Other worthwhile clicks are comments from students about 9/11, tips for parents and teachers about talking to kids about 9/11, and a page of related online and offline resources.

The September 11 Digital Archive is another amazing retrospective, this one organized by City University of New York and George Mason University. The memories submitted by visitors are organized by media: email, still photos, videos, audio, documents and websites. The 9/11 FAQ section answers a variety of questions about that day (including the history of the World Trade Center and plans for rebuilding) by providing links to authoritative websites such as the New York Times and Washington Post.

For high school students and adults, the Washington Post takes a look at the events of September 11 from today's vantage point. It includes a story about four young adults who would have graduated from college this year, if their parents hadn't died in the World Trade Center attack. Site highlights are the extensive photo, audio, and video galleries, along with current news about on the war on terrorism. Some of the stories require free registration.
The following links are either new discoveries or sites that didn't make it into my newspaper column because of space constraints. Enjoy!
