Yes, because diagramming helps the student see the interrelationships between the words. Two adverbs or two prepositional phrases can play very different roles in a sentence but MCT's 4-level analysis treats them as the same.

For others, diagramming is not going to add to what they've already learned through other means. The end goals of all kinds of grammar programs, including diagramming, are, I think, to be able to use language correctly and thoughtfully; and to understand something about how one's language works.

Grammar is very cerebral and very visual. Diagramming is a way to give it more spacial, hands-on properties. Sometimes we diagram sentences in other languages to see their sentence structure. If a child diagrams a sentence correctly, you can tell that he understands its structure--just another way of testing him. Need more?

Learning to diagram simple sentences allows to you truly understand the more complex parts of sentence (phrases and clauses) when you get to that level. It's a teaching tool.

Diagramming was designed specifically for English, so you might have to revise some rules for other languages and maybe even the formatting. It would probably be better to see if there was a version that was created just for the language, or you might use the methods linguists use though I don't know how hard that is to learn.

The rules for diagramming would not perfectly apply to French, as we sometimes deal with totally different sentence structures. Of course, right now, I can't think of a case. Duh. Oh! One reason comes to mind. This is very weird in French, but some words change meaning depending on the place in the sentence. For example "Sébastien est un grand homme" and "Sébastien est un homme grand ...

Knowing proper sentence structure, nouns, verbs, clauses, prepositions - knowing these things makes you a better writer (certainly a better self-editor at least!). For me, I teach grammar to mastery and not beyond and we didn't really get into it until 5th grade.
