Consonant-Vowel-Consonant

Consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words such as “kid”, “hat” and “car” are frequently taught in kindergarten and first grade. Today’s website picks include printable activity sheets, online games, and classroom activities that reinforce sight reading of these three-letter words, and learning short vowel sounds.

Adrian Bruce: CVC Change4 stars

CVC Change is a printable consonant-vowel-consonant game for two to four players. To begin, print the word cards (scroll down the page to find them in both Word and PDF formats), then laminate and cut. Deal each player five cards. The dealer starts the game by tossing out a word card, and pronouncing the short vowel sound and reading their word. Players either match the vowel sound, or change to a new vowel. It's a bit like Uno, and complete directions are included in the download packet.

BBC: CVC Words5 stars

BBC offers a huge CVC unit that includes two interactive games, ten Magic Pencil video clips with activity sheets, four printable games, ten poem worksheets and lesson plans for teachers. The Magic Pencil activities require the Real Player plugin, which you may need to install if you don't already have it. My favorite click is the Whirlyword Machine. "See how many words you can make from the letters on the fruit machine."

Galactic Phonics: Consonant-Vowel-Consonant Words5 stars

Visit Galactic Phonics for oodles of free printable worksheets, flashcards and an online concentration game called CVC Words Memory Squares (match the CVC word with the correct picture.) Included in the printable worksheets are picture cards, word cards, and activities for initial sounds, medial sounds and final sounds. There are also a few links to external CVC sites at the bottom of the page.

ICT Games: CVC Pop5 stars

"Your next word is 'hat'. Your next word is 'lap'." Click on the floating word bubbles to make them pop, but be sure they fall into the grey collector at the bottom of the screen! "The game supports reading of consonant-vowel-consonant words. The words are grouped by their medial vowel. The target words are chosen randomly from your selected group list every thirty seconds. Sometimes the same word may be repeated."

Tampa Reads: Phonics & Phonemic Awareness5 stars

"Many people are not aware of the difference between phonics and phonemic awareness. While phonics is knowing the sound made by the letter(s), phonemic awareness is understanding where that sound is heard (i.e. beginning or ending of the word)." Lesson 1 is all about CVC words and includes five worksheets for practicing five different skills, such as choosing the beginning or ending sound of CVC words.
