Daily Fun

Barbara J. Feldman

It used to be that only the newspaper was daily, but on the Internet there are lots of sites that publish every day. The following fun sites are all very different from each other. The first is a comic strip, the next is a history site, the third one is a word game, the fourth is a site-of-the-day, and the last is a joke page. These sites only have two things in common. They are all fun, and they all publish daily. So for your dose of daily fun, follow me.

  • Snoopy.com5 stars

Charles Shultz has been writing and drawing the Peanuts comic strip for nearly fifty years. Scroll down to the middle of the page for the strip of the day. But don't stop there. In addition to a thirty day archive of Peanuts strips, you'll find fun Snoopy games, coloring books, and electronic postcards. And don't miss Shultz's own story , surely an inspiration to anyone who has ever dreamed of drawing or writing for a living. For more daily cartoons, visit Comic Zone from the drop-down menu in the top left-hand corner.

  • Today in History5 stars

Take a peek back in time with this History Channel feature, which brings you not just one historic event ("November 1, 1765: Parliament Enacts the Stamp Act. In the face of widespread opposition in the American colonies, Parliament enacts the Stamp Act, a taxation measure to raise revenue for a standing British army in America.") but several. Curious about your birthday or any other special date? Enter the month and date to jump to its unique history. Interested in Wall Street, automotive, Civil War, or technology history? You'll also find daily history categorized by these topics.

  • Word Game of the Day5 stars

"Got two minutes?" These daily puzzles for high-schoolers and adults come in five formats, playing with definitions, synonyms, antonyms, word ladder transformations, slang, even some history and geography. The games require a Java-enabled browser and are based on reference material from Merriam-Webster. Some are a little slow to load, but the game play is very quick and very addictive. Visit the two-month archive at the bottom of the page to play previous games.

  • WorldVillage Family Site of the Day3 stars

Lots of sites produce a Cool Site of the Day feature, but WorldVillage delivers one that is always family-friendly. And they've been doing it (every day) since January 1997. The site selection is eclectic, as it should be. Recently chosen sites featured the Yankees and the Braves, President Teddy Roosevelt, and clean humor.

  • Yahooligans! Jokes3 stars

"Why do fish live in salt water?" Alexander, age 10, tells us "Because pepper makes them sneeze." Have a joke you want to share? Submit it to Yahooligans! along with your first name and age and you just might be published. Sorry, there are no archives of past jokes, just "a new joke every day."

The following links are either new discoveries or sites that didn't make it into my newspaper column because of space constraints. Enjoy!
