King Tut

Barbara J. Feldman

Tutankhamun, popularly known as King Tut, was a little-known Egyptian pharaoh who ruled from 1332 BC to 1323 BC. After centuries of obscurity, he became a popular pop culture icon when British archeologist, Howard Carter, discovered his well-preserved tomb in 1922. In recent years, artifacts from King Tut’s tomb have toured the world’s museums.

  • Discovery: King Tut Unwrapped4 stars

These eleven feature-length videos from the Discovery channel explore the modern DNA forensic techniques used to discover King Tut's history. "It's a thirty-three hundred year-old missing person's case, and there aren't many leads." The videos reveal the discovery of Tutankhamun's mother, father, and sister Ankhesenamun whom he married (as was the tradition of Ancient Egyptian ruling families.) "Inbreeding among the members of King Tut's family may have led to congenital deformities including the young king's club foot."

"The name King Tut has instant recognition in today's world, however, prior to the discovery of his tomb in 1922 people were unfamiliar with this pharaoh. In fact, his name had been omitted from all of the lists of rulers the ancient Egyptians compiled." This is the official website for the Tutankhamun exhibit in Seattle that runs until January 6, 2013. Even if you are not able to visit the real-life exhibit, you can still enjoy the educational parts of the site listed under "About King Tut." There you'll find illustrated articles about Howard Carter's 1922 discovery, the mummification process, and a King Tut timeline.

This one-page article about the discovery of King Tut's tomb includes links to additional sites both on and off of Mr. Dunn's site. "One day, in 1922, during the Roaring Twenties, an archaeologist named Howard Carter was working in Egypt. He found a really small tomb. He didn't think much about it because it was so small. He figured it was the tomb of a commoner. You can imagine his excitement when he opened the door and realized he had found the tomb of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, a tomb so small that it had been overlooked for thousands of years!"

Highlights of this multimedia presentation from the interactive National Geographic Magazine include a look at the paintings on the wall of King Tut's tomb, and a detailed look at the shrines that encase the coffins and King Tut's mummified body. "On your right is the eastern wall, and that's where the story of Tutankhamun's afterlife begins. You see Tutankhamun - the mummy of Tutankhamun - laid out of a funerary shrine, and the funerary shrine is being pulled by mourners, and the mourners are dressed in white, and there are groups of mourners."
