Electronic Pen Pals

Barbara J. Feldman

Has the art of letter writing been lost? Certainly cell phones, beepers and voice mail have replaced many letters, but what about the emergence of e-mail and Usenet news groups? Writing skills are still important and these new technologies can be forums for children to develop their skills. Introduce your kids to the thrill of becoming an e-pal (electronic pen pal). Maybe one day they will publish a collection of their life’s e-mails.

  • High School CyberPals5 stars

Wow! This terrific site includes a search engine to quickly find cyberpals that share your interests, your age, or come from a specific locale. For example, a search on hockey and Canada produced six potential pen pals. Another unique feature of this site is a password that lets you edit your entry after it's been posted.

  • Pen Pal Box5 stars

Another hit from our friends at Kids' Space! This pen pal site includes both individual and classroom entries. If your class or club wants to correspond with another class, this is the place to visit. Just click on the "Class Box" and enjoy! Personal entries are sorted into boxes by age. The graphics really enhance this site, as each message displays a country flag and a drawing of either a boy face or a girl face. (Enter as guest or join.)

    Honorable Mentions

The following links are either new discoveries or sites that didn't make it into my newspaper column because of space constraints. Enjoy!
