Pablo Picasso

Barbara J. Feldman

Born October 25, 1881 in Málaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso became the defining artist of the twentieth century. As I learned about his life, I was struck by the observation that Picasso was blessed with parents who recognized his gift at an early age. • Picasso and Portraiture4 stars

Calling itself the "Official Picasso Web Site," this Club Internet site is moderated by Picasso's son Claude Picasso. It promises to keep us up-to-date on Picasso events around the world, but sadly has not been updated for many years. The Picasso and Portraiture exhibit remains online, however, and is wonderful and quite extensive: a private showing of sixty works from the 1996 traveling exhibit, mounted by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

  • Picasso: The Early Years5 stars

"The most celebrated artist of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso was a prodigy whose virtuosity, imagination, and expressive power were evident long before he reached the age of twenty. This [Boston Museum of Fine Arts] exhibition examines the first decade and a half of Picasso's extraordinary career." To see the entire exhibit, click on the thumbnails (small paintings) and then traverse through the site using the Next button. Also fascinating is the time line which places Picasso's early life events in sequence with other artistic and cultural icons of the twentieth century such as Sigmund Freud, the Wright brothers, Paul Gauguin and Renoir.
