Thanksgiving Crafts

Barbara J. Feldman

With cooler, shorter fall days, now is the perfect time to gather round the kitchen table with construction paper, glue, paint and scissors to make some Thanksgiving crafts. I could never design any of these clever craft projects myself, but I do know where to find them online. Remember, it’s not about coloring within the lines or cutting along them, it’s just about having fun and being together. Enjoy!

  • Better Homes & Gardens: Thanksgiving Crafts5 stars

These Thanksgiving craft projects run the gamut from Kids' Crafts (scroll down a bit) to hostess gifts, but all are illustrated and well documented. One preschool craft that caught my eye was the Turkey Keeper made with construction paper outlines of your child's hands and feet. "Write the date on the back of the turkey so you can remember, in the years to come, when it was that your children really were this small." To peruse ideas for other holidays, click over to the drop-down Holidays menu in the upper left-hand corner.

  • DLTK-Kids: Thanksgiving Activities3 stars

At DLTK, it's not just about Thanksgiving crafts, but also about online games (Thanksgiving Word Searches and Jigsaws), recipes ("some for mom, some for kids"), songs, greeting cards, coloring pages, and printables. A few of my favorites were printable Thanksgiving Bingo cards (great for an after dinner game, look in Printables) and Autumn Leaf Turkey (found in Turkey Crafts.)

  • Enchanted Learning: Thanksgiving Crafts5 stars

"The first Thanksgiving in the USA was a feast in 1621 shared by the Pilgrims (who had recently settled Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts) and the Wampanoag Indians, who shared their corn, squash, and wild turkeys. This first feast was not repeated until over a decade later. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln." Enchanted Learning specializes in printable crafts to cut, color, glue and fill-in. If your kids are under ten, their Thanksgiving collection will not disappoint.

  • Family Fun: Best Ever Thanksgiving5 stars

Family Fun's Thanksgiving mini-site is my pick of the day because of the quality of their crafts, and the ability to add projects to a personalized craft box. I also really liked reading the comments added by other site readers. Posting comments is fun too. Although they are sprinkled in other categories as well, most of the craft projects are in the Turkey Crafts section. Look for Balloon Turkeys, Turkey Bread Basket and Turkey Place Markers. Saving favorites in your craft or recipe box requires free registration.

  • Kids Domain: Thanksgiving Crafts5 stars

The first thing that struck me at Kids Domain was that pipe cleaners are now called chenille stems. When did that happen? Anyway I thought the Chenille Stem Turkey (made with fancy, bumpy chenille stems) was really cute. I also liked the Edible Thanksgiving Turkey (made out of candy, not meat) which they suggest would make " a cute edible place setting at your table." Lots of choices here; enough to wear out even the hardiest of crafters.
