Trivia

Barbara J. Feldman

American Heritage Dictionary defines “trivia” as “insignificant or inessential matters; trifles.” On the Web, however, the word “trivia” covers all sorts of quizzes and challenges. Sometimes the subject matter is trivial (“Who owns the world’s largest gum wrapper collection?”) but other times it is educational (“What’s the capital of Virginia?”) You’ll find both trivial and non-trivial fun at these trivia sites.

  • BrainQuest Challenge4 stars

"Welcome to 2-Minute Brain Quest, the online game that quizzes you on the stuff you need to know, when you need to know it." BrainQuest (the publisher of those clever grade-appropriate quiz decks) has two online quizzes: one for ages six to nine, another for nine to thirteen-year olds. Everyone who finishes gets the opportunity to post his/her score and email it to a friend along with a challenge.

  • Cool Quiz!5 stars

Cool Quiz! is my pick of the day and a fun place to visit for a daily fact, quote, word, celebrity birthday and historical anniversary. Cool Quiz! trivia is packaged three ways: interesting facts organized by subject (see the Trivia Directory), timed quizzes (see Trivia Challenge or Flash Quiz), and un-timed interactive quizzes (see Quizzes or Puzzles.) If you're over thirteen, you can even submit your own trivia quiz consisting of at least five questions. You'll find the submission link on the Quizzes home page.

  • Fun Trivia Portal5 stars

Fun Trivia boasts 355,099 trivia questions in 3,857 categories, organized into 28,925 self-scoring interactive quizzes. Best feature here is the great list of categories, which include topics as diverse as European Geography, Wild Mammals and Children's Literature (just to name a few!) Anyone can play, but if you register for free, you can save your best scores, and create your own quizzes. Trivia fanatics can upgrade to Gold Membership for a fee, and get an ad-free playing environment.

  • Guinness World Records5 stars

Guinness World Records was founded in 1955 as a promotional stunt for the Irish brewery of the same name. Since then, Guinness World Records has become a household name, synonymous with trivia. Their online factoid machine will amaze you with gross, funny, and unbelievable world records such as Fastest Tennis Serve or Most Pierced Woman. Just how amazing are these world records? Let Guinness know by rating them on a scale of one to ten in the How Amazing poll. And before you go, try your hand at earning a top game score: How many virtual worms can you eat in sixty seconds?

  • Triviaplaza3 stars

Triviaplaza hosts 600 ten-question quizzes in three top-level categories: Geography, Movies, and Pop Music. For educational play, the Geography sub-categories and questions are excellent. For fabulous state quizzes, try Geography/Americas/ USA Shapes I & II and States I & II. Unfortunately the game play is a bit slow, as each page has to load twice per question: once for your response, and once for the correct answer.
