Online Frauds and Scams 101

by Barbara J. Feldman on October 22, 2007

One thing that many people are unaware of with Internet scams and frauds is that sometimes you can end up passing along a scam by just simply forwarding an email, but many times those forwarding emails that you are sending are hoaxes, which are quite a bit different from scams and fraud that happens online. When it comes to scams and fraud the Internet is actually one of the easiest places to fulfill those scams and frauds because of how many people are unaware of the different scams that go on and how many people don’t know how to tell the difference between something that is fake and something that is real. But another reason that the Internet is so popular with scammers is that it is a cheap and easy way to communicate with hundreds of people without them ever finding out who you actually are.

One of the saddest things about online scams and frauds is that it has a very high crime rate but it is actually severely underreported. The reason that it is severely underreported is that people don’t think anything can be done about online fraud or they don’t report it because they feel foolish for having been taking advantage of or for falling for something like that. The truth of the matter is that no matter how smart you are or how close you pay attention to your surroundings you too can become a victim of online fraud or online scams. But what you need to do as a victim is to report these crimes to the proper authorities so that something can be done about it and more people will come forward who have also been victims. Putting a name and face to the crimes that these people are committing is the best way we can go about making these crimes real to everybody else and letting them know that it can happen to anybody.

When you get an email or read an ad online or happen to stumble upon a website when searching the Internet, there are some things that you are going to need to keep in the back of your mind so that you can help protect yourself from falling victim to online fraud or scams. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that if the deal or offer sounds too good to be true then it probably is. What this means is that if the ad or email is promising you hundreds of dollars in one day for doing no work then you are probably about to be drawn into a scam. Another thing that you need to look out for is people or companies who want you to send money to them so you can get on some list to work from home or to apply for some type of job. When it comes to working for a legitimate company you need to keep in mind that they are not going to require you to pay for training or any materials that you might need because you are becoming their employee.

Something else that you need to know about online scams and frauds is that there are only a few scams and frauds that have actually been thought of. But this doesn’t mean that there are only a few scams and frauds out there. What has happened is that those base frauds and scams are being modified to create new frauds and scams, but the underlying structure is still the same.

If you ever have any questions about whether something is an online scam or fraud a great website that you can go visit to find out more is Wired Safety and Snopes.
