What Is A Facebook Profile?

by Barbara J. Feldman on March 14, 2010

Are you looking for a great way to hook up with your old classmates without paying for an expensive website to do so? One of the best ways to find old friends is to sign up for a Facebook account. Facebook offers you the chance to reconnect with your old friends and to make some new ones.

Facebook is one of the biggest social networking sites available. It user-friendly and millions of people are using the site each day. To help you get started with your new Facebook account, here are some tips that will help you understand what a Facebook profile is and how to use it:

Tip # 1 – Tell a story
Your Facebook profile is designed to help you tell your story. The entire goal of the profile is to let people know what you are interested in and what you are up to. Browse through some of the other profiles and you will quickly see how much fun it is to find out some of your oldest friends may like the same TV show that you do and you never knew it. Facebook is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it and if you want to meet new people, you need to spend some time on your profile so Facebook can help you get hooked up with these new people.

Tip # 2 – Your likes and dislikes
If you are searching for a person to date, wouldn’t it be nice to see what type of things you have in common? This will help you determine if you should make a move with one person of if you know they are not your type. Your Facebook profile page gives you a chance to tell the world what your likes and dislikes are. You can list information about your religious preferances, sexuality, political views, and many other things. Knowing the answers to some of these questions before you start dating can save you some heartbreak in the end if you know you just cannot be compatible with a person that doesn’t have the same core beliefs or ideas as you.

Tip # 3 – Pictures
Part of the fun of Facebook is uploading pictures and complete photo albums to share with your friends. If you have some pictures you want to share with your loved ones that live far away, you can post them on Facebook and they can go in and view the pictures and comment on them. Browsing through your friends pictures is also a lot of fun as you can see all the adventures they have been on, children they have, people they married, etc. If you are trying to meet new people, pictures can really help you out since you can look over their profile page to determine if you are initially attracted to them. A word of caution with the pictures, some employers actually use Facebook as a way to screen their future employees so you weekend partying pictures may not be the best choice to put on your page if you are applying for a new job.

Tip # 4 – Contact information
If you want your old pals to call you, text you, or email you, you will need to include this information in your profile. A lot of people include links to their personal websites, business websites, and family blogs through their Facebook account. This is a great way to get your website information out there and it can help to boost your internet PageRank status as you have a strong backlink feeding into your personal website, blog, or business website. If you are worried about putting your contact information on the internet, make sure you set your account to private so only your friends can see this information.
