Another Native American group was the Southwest Indians. They are known for some of the most artistic pottery and art creations. Here are a couple of crafts from the southwest Indian people:

• Kachina dolls can be found in many different places and are fun to make. The Pueblo though that Kachinas were ancestral spirits sent to help the people. It was thought that over 300 different Kachinas existed and their spirits lived among the people. You can make Kachina dolls using wooden spools for their bodies, and a wooden ball for the head. Kids can then decorate them however they choose.

• Sand paintings were used on the floor of some of the Hogan’s in the Southwest Indian people. They were made by sifting herbs and other powdery materials. They were believed to help heal the sick. You can make sand paintings using different colors of sand and glue or double sided tape. For young children it is better to already have a picture ready for them to make; for older children they might have fun drawing and painting their own picture.
