{"id":415,"date":"2011-04-19T05:19:45","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T12:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surfnetkids.com\/go\/?p=415"},"modified":"2017-08-21T10:04:18","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T17:04:18","slug":"10-little-known-facts-about-ellis-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.surfnetkids.com\/go\/415\/10-little-known-facts-about-ellis-island\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Little Known Facts About Ellis Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1831\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1831\" alt=\"Ellis Island today.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.surfnetkids.com\/go\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Ellis_Island_crop-e1384450698749.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"396\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellis Island today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ellis Island is best known as the landing place for many immigrants throughout the 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries.\u00a0 And while this will always be the primary reason that many know of the island\u2019s existence, there are several, little known facts that prove interesting when considering the rich history of the iconic landmark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) <\/strong><strong> Ellis Island is named after a tavern owner that once operated on the island itself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ellis Island had many names before Samuel Ellis purchased it, and set up shop as a tavern owner.\u00a0 The business catered to the fishermen and sailors that conducted business in the harbor and surrounding waterways.\u00a0 After his death, Ellis\u2019 heirs sold the island to the state of New York, and it was eventually transferred to the United States government.\u00a0 In 1890, Ellis Island was\u00a0named the new immigration station of the Port of New York by the House Committee on Immigration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2) <\/strong><strong> Before operating as an immigration facility, Ellis Island housed military weaponry and ammunition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Long before immigrants came to Ellis Island for amnesty, the location was used to hold ammunition and weaponry for the United States military.\u00a0 This was the primary use for the island until Congress converted the facility into an immigration processing center.\u00a0 Before, there was a federal immigration location, each state handled the process individually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3) <\/strong><strong> A young Irish woman was the first person to pass through Ellis Island once it was an immigration station.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Annie Moore turned 15 years old the day she was admitted at Ellis Island with her two brothers, on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 1892.\u00a0 Coming all the way from Ireland, she was also the first person to ever pass through the immigration station once the federal government had converted it.\u00a0 Soon after, thousands of Irish immigrants would pass through Ellis Island looking for a new life in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(4) <\/strong><strong> Ellis Island has been called \u201cHeartbreak Island\u201d despite the millions that have passed through the immigration center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To those that immigrated to the United States and met the screening process, Ellis Island was known as the &#8220;Island of Hope&#8221; or &#8220;Island of Dreams.&#8221;\u00a0 The United States found it important to screen all incoming immigrants before allowing them into the country.\u00a0 Those that were sick or had criminal records were either sent back to their native land or were housed until they were well enough to enter the country.\u00a0 Because of the chance of rejection, some immigrants coined Ellis Island \u201cHeartbreak Island\u201d or &#8220;Island of Tears.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>(5) <\/strong><strong> The total number of immigrants that have entered the United States through Ellis Island is around 12 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though it is no longer used as an immigration station, Ellis Island saw the admittance of over 12 million immigrants in its 62 year existence.\u00a0 In 1907, a single day saw nearly 12,000 immigrants pass through!\u00a0 That\u2019s quite a few dreams!<\/p>\n<p><strong>(6) <\/strong><strong> Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are both part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1965,\u00a0President Lyndon B. Johnson\u00a0declared\u00a0Ellis Island\u00a0a part of \u00a0the Statue of Liberty National Monument, which is now maintained by the National Park Service.\u00a0\u00a0Ellis Island and Liberty Island are part of the same national park operation.\u00a0 Frederic Bartholdi personally chose Bedloe&#8217;s Island in the New York Harbor for its location.\u00a0 The monument was dedicated on October 28, 1886, as a symbol of freedom and hope for the American people.\u00a0The Statue of Liberty was unveiled on that date, by President Grover Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>The Statue of Liberty was designated as a National Monument in 1924 by President Calvin Coolidge.\u00a0 The Statue of Liberty now rests on Liberty Island.\u00a0 Liberty Island was formerly known as Bedloe&#8217;s Island until 1956.\u00a0 The Statue of Liberty National Monument remains a huge attraction for travelers all over the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(7) <\/strong><strong> Ellis Island was originally 3.3 acres, but grew to 27.5 acres, nearly 3 times its original size!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the government purchased Ellis Island from the Ellis family, the island was 3.3 acres in total area.\u00a0\u00a0During the\u00a0time the city of New York\u00a0was creating the New York City Subway System,\u00a0spoils of the rocks and dirt removed from the ground to create the tunnels were dumped on the island.\u00a0 This expanded the size, giving it the width it has today. Liberty Island, Ellis Island and Black Tom Island were called the Oyster Islands.\u00a0 Today, Black Tom Island is now a part of Liberty State Park, on the mainland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(8) <\/strong><strong> In World War II, Ellis Island was used as a Coast Guard training facility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite its history with immigration, Ellis Island has seen time as a weapons storage facility and a training facility.\u00a0 However, Ellis Island also served as a\u00a0internment camp for German, Italian, Japanese US citizens, naturalized citizens and resident foreigners.\u00a0 During World War II, the camp held approximately 8,000 German, Italian and Japanese &#8220;alien enemies&#8221; and their families.\u00a0 They were detained in the Main Immigration Building, which was not under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(9) <\/strong><strong> An immigration museum now exists on the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visitors to Ellis Island today can\u00a0visit the\u00a0Ellis Island \u00a0Immigration Museum that shows the incredible history of the national monument.\u00a0 The views of the Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island are incredible!
