I build my nest on the mountain’s crest,
\nWhere the wild winds rock my eaglets to rest,
\nWhere the lightnings flash, and the thunders crash,
\nAnd the roaring torrents foam and dash;
\nFor my spirit free henceforth shall be
\nA type of the sons of Liberty.<\/p>\n
Aloft I fly from my eyrie\u00a0high,
\nThrough the vaulted dome of the azure sky;
\nOn a sunbeam bright take my airy flight,
\nAnd float in a flood of liquid light;
\nFor I love to play in the noontide ray,
\nAnd bask in a blaze from the throne of day.<\/p>\n
Away I spring with a tireless wing,
\nOn a feathery cloud I poise and swing;
\nI dart down the steep where the lightnings leap,
\nAnd the clear blue canopy swiftly sweep;
\nFor, dear to me is the revelry
\nOf a free and fearless Liberty.<\/p>\n
I love the land where the mountains stand,
\nLike the watch-towers high of a Patriot band;
\nFor I may not bide in my glory and pride,
\nThough the land be never so fair and wide,
\nWhere Luxury reigns o’er voluptuous plains,
\nAnd fetters the free-born soul in chains.<\/p>\n
Then give to me in my flights to see
\nThe land of the pilgrims ever free!
\nAnd I never will rove from the haunts I love
\nBut watch, from my sentinel-track above,
\nYour banner free, o’er land and sea,
\nAnd exult in your glorious Liberty.<\/p>\n
O, guard ye well the land where I dwell,
\nLest to future times the tale I tell,
\nWhen slow expires in smoldering fires
\nThe goodly heritage of your sires,
\nHow Freedom’s light rose clear and bright
\nO’er fair Columbia’s beacon-hight,
\nTill ye quenched the flame in a starless night.<\/p>\n
Then will I tear from your pennon fair
\nThe stars ye have set in triumph there;
\nMy olive-branch on the blast I’ll launch,
\nThe fluttering stripes from the flagstaff wrench,
