Dear Reader,
Although I missed Sea Otter Awareness Week (it was at the end of September), the Surfnetkids Sea Otters resource page was out of date, and I had it on my list to update. So, here you go. Better late than never! Hope this newsletter finds you well.
See ya on the Net,

Did you know that sea otters are members of the weasel family? To keep them warm as they folic in the cold Pacific Ocean, they have the densest fur of any mammal. Unfortunately, their beautiful, waterproof coats also make them attractive to the fur trade. There is good news on the conservation front, however, as sea otter populations have recently increased. Learn more about the adorable sea otter at these fun sites.
DK Findout: Sea Otter
“The sea otter is the only species of otter that spends almost its whole life at sea, even though it rarely travels farther than 0.6 miles from the coast.” Visit this DK site to learn about the sea otter’s dense fur, its hind feet, and the reason why sea otters often hold hands! You can also explore other otter species by following the links on the horizontal navigation menus.
Kids National Geographic: Sea Otter
“While floating on their backs, sea otters not only nap, but also use rocks to help them open mussels or other shellfish. Otters place a rock on their chests and smash the shellfish against it until it breaks open to reveal the tasty meat inside.” National Geographic offers up fast facts about sea otters, such their scientific name, average size and weight, and type of diet (they are carnivores). Don’t miss the slide deck at the top of the page, and the fun Weird but True video at the bottom of the page that explains why newborn sea otters don’t drown!
Marine Mammal Center: Sea Otters
The Marine Mammal Center is a non-profit organization that focuses on marine mammal rescue and the health of the marine ecosystem. Since 1975, they’ve rescued more than 24,000 marine mammals along the coast of California and the Big Island of Hawaii. Visit this Sea Otter page to listen to an otter bark, and to learn about their habitat. “Sea otters were once found from Mexico to Alaska, and even Japan. Currently, the California population of about 3,000 individuals range from Half Moon Bay to Point Conception. There is a much larger population of sea otters found in Alaska, and some are still found in Russia as well.”
