Fire Prevention Week is celebrated every October. Originally proclaimed as Fire Prevention Day in 1920 by President Woodrow Wilson, it commemorated the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge expanded the event to a whole week. He noted that in the previous year some 15,000 lives were lost to fire in the US. Calling the loss “startling,” President Coolidge’s proclamation stated: “This waste results from conditions which justify a sense of shame and horror; for the greater part of it could and ought to be prevented.”

American Red Cross: Fire Safety for Kids

“Tragically, many home fires are started by children playing with dangerous household items – especially lighters and matches. Taking sensible precautions in the home and teaching your child how to escape from a fire can help your family avoid this type of heartbreak.” In addition to tips on teaching fire safety, this American Red Cross site includes instructions on how to add Pedro’s Fire Safety Challenge game to your Google Assistant or Alexa device. “Pedro’s Fire Challenge is a fun and engaging interactive game created by the Red Cross for children ages 4-8 years old that teaches age-appropriate skills for handling a home fire emergency and other stressful situations.”

Burn Institute: Fire Safe Kid

“Play games, take quizzes, watch cool videos and learn how to become a fire safe kid just like me!” In addition to the Kids Zone, there is also a portal for families that covers fire safety for home, holiday, travel and outdoors, and one for teachers with fire safety curriculum for grades K-12. For preschoolers, look at the Hot or Not game and the interactive coloring games.

National Fire Protection Association: Fire Protection Week

Vital fire safety information is presented for kids (grades K-3) and big kids (grades 4-6). Additionally, parents can find family fire safety and scald prevention tips in the horizontal menu near the top of the page. “A scald is a burn caused by hot liquid, food or steam. Over 60% of all burns to young children are scalds.”
