Their website provides ideas on how to celebrate the annual event in your community or school, lists of frequently banned books, and resources for fighting a local challenge “A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice.” <\/p>\n<p>Banned Books Week<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.surfnetkids.com\/images\/kid-sml-star5.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"*****\"> <br \/>\n“Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982.” With separate sections of resources for kids, librarians, teachers, parents, students, writers, booksellers and artists, this is another American Library Association website, created in association with about a dozen other official sponsors. Be sure to visit their YouTube page to view videos of readers reading from their favorite banned or challenged book. <\/p>\n<p>Comic Book Legal Defense Fund<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.surfnetkids.com\/images\/kid-sml-star5.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"*****\"> <br \/>\nComic books are also frequently challenged, but I was surprised to learn about the existence of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
