Dear Reader,<\/p>\n

I’ve been to the Anne Frank House museum twice. First in 1978, and again in 2012. It always struck me that Anne was just a few months older than my mom, and her dad the same age as my maternal grandfather. Mom, however, made it out of Vienna in 1939. Just a small, twist of fate, but an important one for our family.<\/p>\n

If you are going to be in Amsterdam, I highly recommend booking a visit to the Anne Frank House online before you travel. Otherwise the lines are hours long. Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities, and although I don’t often write travel articles, I was inspired on my last trip there to write about seeing Amsterdam on a layover<\/a>. In addition to my travel tips, you’ll see pictures of me in Amsterdam!<\/p>\n

Anne Frank was just thirteen-years old when she and her family went into hiding behind the Amsterdam office of her father to avoid persecution by Hitler\u2019s Nazis. One of her dearest possessions was the diary she had just received as a birthday present. Anne died of typhus in March of 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, but her father survived to publish her diary in 1947. Today, translated into sixty-seven languages, Anne Frank’s diary has been read by millions.<\/p>\n

Anne Frank Fonds

Anne Frank’s father, Otto Frank, established the Anne Frank Fonds foundation in 1963 “to make the diaries and works by Anne Frank accessible to the general public.” Best clicks are found in Family (photos, biographies, historical context) and Diary (origin, short stories, and related books). “Miep Gies and Bep Voskuij found Anne Frank’s diaries after the family had been deported. The women were secretaries for Opekta-Werke, where Anne Frank’s father had also worked, and were members of the group of helpers who had hidden the family.”<\/p>\n

Millions of people from all over the world have visited the house in Amsterdam where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary while hiding from the Nazis. And to put a modern twist on the lessons of the holocaust, don’t miss the Out of Line exhibit which explores what happens when freedom of speech clashes with a person’s right to be protected against discrimination.
