Since my brother-in-law asked for my favorite phone apps (hat tip to Paul), \u00a0I thought I’d share my list here with you too. \u00a0After each app, I list the platforms for which the app is available: \u00a0Android, iOS, Windows or Blackberry.<\/p>\n

1) \u00a0Evernote<\/a> is a cross-platform, cloud-based \u00a0“remember everything” application. \u00a0 To call it a note editor would be demeaning. \u00a0Evernote is one of those<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

simple, but deep, apps that are useful right out of the box, but grow in usefulness as you learn more about their\u00a0capabilities. \u00a0I use it to save tech tips (lots of Unix commands, for example), recipes, favorite wines, important family stuff like passport numbers, \u00a0and travel agendas, just to name a few. \u00a0My favorite features are: \u00a0the Chrome\/Google search integration, password protected notes, notebooks, \u00a0the web clipper, and \u00a0text-search of words within photos. \u00a0Yup, \u00a0if you attach a photo or drawing to a note, \u00a0all the words in that photo are converted to text and available for search. \u00a0For \u00a0example, when I take a snapshot of a wine bottle label, \u00a0I can find that wine by searching for the name of the winery, \u00a0the type of wine, the year, \u00a0any text that appears on that bottle! \u00a0Pretty amazing. \u00a0I could go on, but \u00a0I’ve got to get to the rest of the list. \u00a0(Android, iOS, Windows, Blackberry)<\/p>\n

2) \u00a0ColorNote<\/a>\u00a0is a simple note editor that backs up\/syncs to the cloud. \u00a0 Despite everything I just said about Evernote, sometimes you just need a simple checklist app. \u00a0I use ColorNote for my mobile to-dos that include lists by store (Costco, CVS, Grocery Store) and other mobile errands such as oil changes, dry cleaning, etc. \u00a0 You know that good feeling you get when you cross things off your to-do list? \u00a0ColorNote provides the same feedback when you click on an item and it draws a line right through it! \u00a0Done! \u00a0 (Android)<\/p>\n

3) Amazon Price Check<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0I really do feel sorry for brick-and-mortar stores that are struggling to compete with Amazon. \u00a0\"\"But that said, \u00a0this app is NOT just for price checks, it also can be used to read product reviews. \u00a0For example, \u00a0in Costco I scanned the UPC code of a small camera to see what Amazon users had to say about it. \u00a0Turns out the reviews were pretty good. \u00a0 I also learned that the Amazon price was $30 less than the Costco price. \u00a0I do, however, \u00a0feel guilty standing in a store using this app. \u00a0Sigh. \u00a0 What do you think? \u00a0It is rude to \u00a0scan an item in the aisles of a retail store?\u00a0(Android)<\/p>\n

4) Shazam<\/a>\u00a0I actually forgot to tell Paul about this one, but remembered it while in the car with my brother and sister-in-law on the way to the Outside Lands music festival this weekend. \u00a0 \u00a0We were listening to the radio, and my sis exclaimed her love for the song that was playing, but she didn’t know who sang it. \u00a0 Hmmm, I thought, \u00a0I have an app for that! \u00a0I whipped out my phone, and\u00a0clicked on Shazam. The app listened to the song through the phone microphone, found a match in its huge music database, and it identified it for us. The song \u00a0was “Rolling in the Deep” \u00a0by Adele. \u00a0 This app is fun, fun, fun … especially for old peeps like me that can’t remember anything anymore. \u00a0Ha ha ha! \u00a0\u00a0 (Android, iOS, Windows,Blackberry)<\/p>\n
