The only way to beat them, is to shoot them with cannonballs. In order to shoot them with a cannonball, you must answer the question given to you correctly. If you answer it right, you hit the pirate ship. If you answer it wrong, the pirates hit your ship! Don't get too many questions wrong, or your ship will go down!
