Mother’s Day

Barbara J. Feldman

Mother’s Day is a time to show our gratitude for everything Moms do. And for those Moms who are lucky enough to still have their own Moms to celebrate with, it’s a double holiday. Happy Mother’s Day to all! [Editor's Note: An updated version of this topic can be found here: Mother's Day]

  • Billy Bear's Happy Mother's Day4 stars

Billy Bear comes through for Mom, with gifts to print, color and cut; postcards to send; and certificates to fill out. My favorite clicks are the printable Photo House picture frame that can be colored and filled with family photos, and the always popular Promise Booklet of coupons to relieve Mom of her daily chores.. Other unique electronic gifts include Happy Mother's Day wallpaper and screensavers for Mom's computer.

  • How Stuff Works: Who Came Up with Mother's Day and Why?4 stars

I'd always thought Mother's Day was an American creation, but historians point to Greek and Roman spring festivals that honored mother goddesses as the true origins of our modern celebration. In more recent history, Anna Jarvis started campaigning in 1907 to formalize Mother's Day, and achieved success in 1914 when President Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother's Day. But Jarvis eventually became bitter about the holiday. Learn more at How Stuff Works.

  • Kids Domain: Mother's Day4 stars

Kids Domain has just what you're looking for with electronic and printable greeting cards, the story of how Mother's Day began, and oodles of ideas for homemade gifts. Most unique clicks are the printable activities (crosswords, word searches, mazes) that can be used in the classroom, or to amuse kids during a Mothers Day family gathering, and a great collection of clipart for creating a printed Mother's Day card or even a website tribute to the woman that changed your dirty diapers.

  • Kids Turn Central Mother's Day4 stars

Kids Turn comes through for Mom with certificates (World's Best Mom), e-cards (Thanks for Always Being There), and a place to post tributes. What Kids Turn also offers, that no one else has, is a short discussion of Mother's Day conflicts. "Not everyone has someone they call Mom. Many kids have more than one person to call Mom. Some thoughts and ideas on spending Mother's Day with the different people you can call Mom." The article addresses issues surrounding step-moms, birth moms, foster moms, parenting grandparents and volunteer moms such as those from Big Sisters.
