Technology Tools That Defeat Online Stalking

by Barbara J. Feldman on October 25, 2007

When it comes to online stalking and harassment many people don’t realize that there are some types of technology available that you can use to help avoid and prevent online stalking. But the best thing is that not only can you use certain types of technology, but you can also use plain common sense. In fact using common sense is your best bet at avoiding and preventing online stalking and harassment as opposed to using technology. The reason for this is that technology can only get you so far in avoiding and preventing online stalking and harassment.

Here are some tips on some of the best technology that you can use to avoid and prevent online stalking and harassment.

Tip one:

Internet monitoring software is a parental control software tool that allows parents or guardians to monitor all computer activity that occurs on the monitored computer. This software does not currently come installed on computers and must be purchased and installed in addition to other parental controls. But the great thing about Internet monitoring software is that it is designed to operate in a way that prevents children from knowing that their computer activities are being monitored. Internet monitoring is a great tool to help ensure that your children are safe on the Internet, as well as making sure that your children are obeying your rules on the computer.

Tip two:

Some other technology that you can use is regular parental control software; this would be in addition to Internet monitoring software. This software is designed to allow your children to have restricted access to the Internet which will help you to protect them when they are online. With the parental control software you are going to be the one setting the limits as to what websites children can go to, who they can receive email from, who they can send email to, and many other safety factors. The good thing about this software is that most computers now come with this type of software already installed, and if your computer doesn’t offer it then most likely your Internet service provider will.

Tip three:

But perhaps the best technology that you can use to prevent and avoid online stalking and harassment is your own computer’s technology. What you need to do here is to actually use your common sense, and if you feel that you are a victim of online stalking and harassment the best thing that you can do is to leave the room that you are uncomfortable in. If that doesn’t work then you are going to need to use your computer to report the incident to their Internet service provider or the chat room administrator.

Tip four:

Another thing that you are going to need to do is to keep in mind what you are posting on the Internet; this is actually the best way to avoid online stalking and harassment. The reason that this is the best way to avoid online stalking and harassment is that you are limiting what information people are able to receive about you. And the less that they know about you the harder time they will have trying to stalk you and harass you online. So what you need to think about before posting personal information is are you comfortable with strangers knowing this about you. But what you can keep in mind is if you are shopping online and need to post private information in order to complete your order then you want to make sure that it is being done on a secure website.
