To make a bat costume you will need scissors, a black umbrella (a broken one will work just as well), black duct tape, safety pins, a dark outfit (like a black hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants), and enough felt to make bat ears. To make the wings for the bat, carefully cut the umbrella material away from the frame. Use black duct tape to patch any holes. Fold the circle of the umbrella in half along a seam and safety-pin the straight, folded edge to the back of the sweatshirt. For added security you can tape hair ties to the inside of the wing tips and slip them around the wrists of whoever is wearing the costume. Cut out the shape of the bat ears from the black felt. Use pipe cleaners to form the ears unto the correct shape and fabric glue to affix them to the hood of the costume wearer. For added safety on a dark night, outline bat ears and the wings with glow-in-the-dark puffy paint.
