    Despite his humble beginnings, historian Carter G. Woodson (1875 – 1950), the son of slaves, earned a Ph.D. from Harvard. He is known as the father of Black History Month and for his scholarly work promoting the accomplishments of African Americans.

    "The 1960s had a dramatic effect on the study and celebration of black history. Before the decade was over, Negro History Week would be well on its way to becoming Black History Month. The shift to a month-long celebration began even before Dr. Woodson death. As early as 1940s, blacks in West Virginia, a state where Woodson often spoke, began to celebrate February as Negro History Month." This one-page history tells the story of how and why Dr. Woodson formed the Association of the Study of Negro Life and History as well as the annual Negro History Week.

    "One of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate from Harvard, Woodson dedicated his career to the field of African-American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide institution. He also wrote many historical works, including the 1933 book The Mis-Education of the Negro." This excellent Library of Congress article is a must read for high-school students writing a school report and grownups wanting more insight into Dr. Woodson's work for the advancement of Blacks.
