Making a cornucopia can be a challenging project, but can also be very rewarding when you spend some time to make it your own. Cornucopia is a very important symbol of the fall season and especially of Thanksgiving because it symbolizes plenty and sharing with others for the holiday season. Here are some ideas to make an interesting and creative cornucopia for this coming Thanksgiving season.
Cornucopias have long been a sign of prosperity and thanksgiving and are often a centerpiece or focal point in Thanksgiving Day decorations. But many people want to decorate with a cornucopia using a little different than traditional Thanksgiving decorations. You have many chances to make your Thanksgiving a little more customized, and a cornucopia is a great way to make another touch of your own. A traditional cornucopia is normally made out of things like large raffia, burlap fabric and either real or fake seasonal decorations like fruits and vegetables. Feel free to branch out, especially if you are living a more modern life and just want a change of pace for your Thanksgiving dinner this year.
You will still need some basic supplies that will be the same whether you are making a more traditional or more modern cornucopia. You’ll need to start with getting a wicker cornucopia which is going to be available from almost any craft or hobby store this time of year. You can feel free to make your own frame, but this can be a very challenging task and take a great deal of time if you aren’t experienced with that type of thing. You’ll also need some type of fabric to cover the cornucopia. This step in the process can really give the decoration a lot of the character that you are looking for and provide the base for the whole project. Start with a different type of fabric like French toile and you can create a very silhouetted theme that can then be carried over to the other parts of the cornucopia. You can also use a very bold and colorful fabric to start it off a little differently and make it a very bright part of the dinner and party.
When you’ve attached the fabric to the frame of the cornucopia, you’ll need to smooth it out and make sure it looks how you want. Then you can start adding the other decorations to the inside of the horn. Normally the inside of the cornucopia is stuffed with colorful corn and squash and other seasonal fruits and vegetables. You can certainly add these to the mix, but also try to add something different to the basket to keep the theme you have created with the fabric to the inside of the horn. If you are going for a glitzy theme, you can cover the same stuffers with some clear glue and then coat them with glitter. Then add some jewels to the fruits and you will have a very bling cornucopia you can show off to your dinner guests. Be sure to attach everything you are working on to the inside so things don’t slip around as people are looking at the centerpiece or as you are moving it to the table for dinner.
No matter what kinds of ideas you have for your cornucopia, you can really get creative with your creation and make something new and different. It’s best to start with the theme you are trying to achieve and them make it match what you are looking for. Making variations on the classic theme or doing something completely out of the ordinary will make the cornucopia your own creation and it will be something you can be proud of for years to come.
