Christmas crafts are a great way to spend time together as a family. We all have a little creativity in us that’s just waiting for an opportunity to show itself and creating fun Christmas crafts is the perfect way to showcase that creativity. Start a new family tradition of creating at least one Christmas craft together each year. This will bring you closer together as a family and it’s will yield lasting memories for your children.
If you have young children, you know that they absolutely love to make things with their hands. They’ll love making Christmas crafts that you can display in your home. Here is a simple guide for coming up with some fun Christmas craft ideas to start a new family tradition:
Choose a craft
The first step in any craft project is choosing a craft to do, keeping the ages of your children in mind as you pick from among the many Christmas craft ideas. For example, a macaroni or cheerios wreath will keep your toddlers occupied and entertained for an entire afternoon; however, your tweens will be bored with it. If you have children of different ages, consider a different craft for each child. You can make a wreath with each child just make your tweens and teens wreaths a little more challenging than the macaroni wreath your toddler might do. Search the internet to find different Christmas craft ideas. You might also want to consider asking your child’s teacher for a few tips.
Ornaments made out of jars, walnuts and dog bones are always going to be a hit with your younger children. If you have older kids, pick a craft that is fun for them to display in the home like a sign that reads ‘Noel’. You can make the sign out of wood or you can teach your child how to sew the letters together with the sewing machine.
Pick up the materials
Deciding upon which Christmas craft to do is one thing, finding all of the materials you need to complete it is another task entirely. Most of the materials you’ll need can be purchased from a craft or hobby store, but they don’t always have everything. You may need to order some of the craft decorations online if you are having a hard time finding everything you need.
Here are a few of the basic materials you will need to get started with your Christmas crafts:
- Glue
- Wiggly eyes
- Fabric
- Cardstock and construction paper
- Wire
- Cotton balls
- Pompoms
- Markers
- Stickers
- Tinsel
While there are many other supplies you may need, depending upon the project you choose, these should at least get you started.
Make time
We all live busy lives, but, in order to bring your family closer together you will need to make craft time a priority. Choose a day during the week where everyone will set aside at least an hour to sit down and do some fun arts and crafts projects for Christmas. Each week before Christmas, have each child come up with a different craft idea for the whole family to do together whether it be Christmas cards, centerpieces, garland or cookies. While your children may grumble about it, someday they will look back on time spent during the holidays with family and appreciate it. They might also pass on the tradition of Christmas craft time to their family.
