Dear Reader,
October is International Dinosaur Month, National Popcorn Month, and Halloween, which has, over the years, transformed from a single day to a whole month!
It’s also the month I celebrate my wedding anniversary. This year is our 33rd!
See ya on the Net,

“In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” And his arrival in the West Indies led to enduring links between Europe and the Americas. In the early years of our nation’s history, Christopher Columbus was raised to hero status by writers and historians wishing to create a common memory for our new nation. Five hundred years later, by the quincentennial of 1992, Columbus’ name had become somewhat tarnished. Is Columbus a hero worth celebrating, or was he a cruel imperialist? Discover the debate, and decide for yourself.
Biography: Christropher Columbus
This Columbus biography includes a section about his status as a hero. “Columbus’ legacy is a mixed one. He has been credited for opening up the Americas to European colonization as well as blamed for the destruction of the native peoples of the islands he explored.” The transfer of ideas, people, plants and diseases between the New and Old World had both benefits and downfalls. The European horse allowed Native Americans to switch from a nomadic lifestyle to a hunting model, but Old World small pox killed millions of Native Americans.
Ducksters: Biography: Christopher Columbus
Fun facts and a ten question quiz are highlights of this biography for elementary-school kids. “Columbus spent years trying to convince someone to pay for his voyage. He first tried to get King John II of Portugal to pay for his journey, but the King was not interested. Finally, he was able to convince Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain to pay for the trip.”
History: Columbus Controversy
“There are three main sources of controversy involving Columbus’s interactions with the indigenous people he labeled ‘Indians’: the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native peoples to Christianity, and the introduction of a host of new diseases that would have dramatic long-term effects on native people in the Americas.” This History.com article concludes that Columbus Day “continues to be an important way for all Americans to learn more about the Age of Exploration and the enormous transformations it provoked.”
