In 1913 Van Dyke was appointed by friend and former classmate Woodrow Wilson as ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, but he resigned in 1916 because of those countries' neutrality during World War I and became lieutenant commander for the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Navy instead.
