The Iditarod starts in Anchorage each year on the first Saturday in March. It ends when the last musher reaches Nome. The race has started in downtown Anchorage since 1983. The Saturday start in Anchorage is a ceremonial start and does not count in the overall time in the race to Nome. Hello friends, Things are amping up here at Iditarod Headquarters for another year of racing. The good news is that we have plenty of snow so the race should go on thru the Northern Route as scheduled without having to make changes.

As of 2:30 p.m. today, 22 mushers have officially entered the 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which will kick off its 54th running in Anchorage on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The Iditarod Air Force is a fleet of small privately owned bush planes flown by volunteers, shuttling dog food and mushers? supplies to each checkpoint, moving veterinarians and race officials up and down the trail and hauling tired dropped dogs back to the major pick up points.
