That. There are illusions that can get you when driving, but driving is really bad weather is more analogous to VFR into IMC than it is to spatial disorientation.

Personally I just stay out of the clouds with room to spare when VFR...most everything else is just textbook exercises because, as someone else mentioned, there's no way to truly gauge distance accurately and, in some cases, optical illusions screw with our perspective.

There are at least a couple visual illusions, potentially combined, that I can think of which might have contributed to this. Seems bizarre to any of us not in the situation, but the eyes are powerful in the brain hierarchy, and they fool us frequently at night.

Between American Optical and Randolph Engineering? which is generally considered better quality for the price? Been looking at aviators, polycarbonate but would like dark tint and understand that polycarbonate does not take tint very well unless it?s polycarbonate, then there?s the endless...

Why would a pilot apply left rudder during a climb? More likely optical illusion due to shadows, camera angle, and pixel interpolation.

LOL, I've worked at an airline where we evaluated cockpit side windows, doors windows and pax cabin windows using an optical micrometer to determine depth of crazing and we repaired windows that were within MM limits.

Magnified optical examination revealed that all the fracture surfaces on the right horizontal stabilizer, elevator, and attachment bracket were consistent with overstress separations, which was likely the source of the loud bang heard by the jumper during the recovery sequence." Loss of control after stalling on jump run over stressed the airframe.

New prop? 63 degrees? What is that? Props are measured by number of blades, length and geometric pitch (inches). How are you determining the RPM? With the tachometer, which is virtually useless, or an optical tachometer? Sounds like the basics have not been covered yet, before complaining.

I use an electronic optical tach in flight every now and then to see if they have changed (counts the blade flicker). The one that is off by 40 is set to the rpm I want (allowing for the error) and the one off by a 100 is matched to the first one by ear.
