I have exactly same issues and also have a HP laptop. In Windows Vista/7 the sound works fine after waking from sleep. In Windows 8 the sound doesn't work until I restart system. I have updated drivers etc and also tried restarting audio service, disabling and re-enabling audio device, troubleshooter etc but nothing has worked.
